How to Choose a Pool Service Company in Utah

Not all pool companies are the same. Here's what to ask, what to look for, and what red flags to watch out for when hiring someone to take care of your pool or hot tub.

How to Choose a Pool Service Company in Utah

Handing the keys to your backyard over to someone is a big deal. You want someone who shows up, does the job right, and doesn't cut corners. But the pool service industry has low barriers to entry, which means quality varies a lot. Here's how to separate the pros from the amateurs.

Check for Insurance

This is the most important thing and the easiest to verify. Any legitimate pool service company should carry general liability insurance. If someone damages your pool equipment, cracks a tile, or slips on your deck, insurance covers it. Without it, you're on the hook.

Ask for a certificate of insurance. A real company will send it within a day. If they dodge the question or say "we're working on it," keep looking.

Ask About Technician Consistency

One of the biggest complaints pool owners have is different people showing up every time. When a new person services your pool each week, nobody learns the quirks — the skimmer that sticks, the jet that needs adjusting, the corner where algae likes to hide.

Ask if the same technician will handle your pool every visit. Companies with dedicated routes give you better, more consistent service because the tech knows your pool personally. They notice small changes early, before they become expensive problems.

Understand What's Included

"Pool cleaning" can mean very different things. Some companies only skim and vacuum — they don't touch chemicals. Others include full water testing and chemical adjustments. Some include filter cleaning; others charge extra for it.

  • Are chemicals included in the price, or do you buy your own?
  • Does the service include water testing and chemical adjustment?
  • How often is the filter cleaned or inspected?
  • Do they check equipment (pump, heater, salt cell) at each visit?
  • Will they leave notes or a report after each visit?

Look for Local Knowledge

Utah pools have specific challenges that a generic pool service might not know about. Hard water, cottonwood season, altitude effects on evaporation and chemical consumption, freeze risks in the fall — these all require local experience.

Ask how long they've been servicing pools in your area. Do they know when cottonwood season hits in your neighborhood? Do they understand the water hardness in your city? A company that's been working in Utah for years will give you better service than a franchise that just moved in.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • No insurance or won't provide proof
  • Long-term contracts with cancellation fees
  • Prices that seem too low (they're probably cutting corners on chemicals or time)
  • No online reviews or a brand-new business with no track record
  • They can't tell you who will service your pool
  • They don't test water chemistry — just add chlorine

Talk to at least 2-3 companies before deciding. Don't just compare price — compare what's included, how they communicate, and how they handle your questions. The cheapest option is rarely the best value when it comes to pool service.
