Above-Ground Pool Care Tips for Utah

Above-ground pools are popular in Utah — they're affordable and don't need a permit in most cities. But they need different care than in-ground pools. Here's what to know.

Above-Ground Pool Care Tips for Utah

Above-ground pools have gotten a lot better in the last few years. The new Intex and Bestway models are affordable, look decent, and give you a real swimming experience. In Utah, they're especially popular because most cities don't require a building permit for above-ground pools (check your local codes to be sure).

But above-ground pools have different maintenance needs than in-ground pools, and Utah's conditions add a few extra wrinkles.

Filtration Is Usually Undersized

Most above-ground pools come with a filter pump that's barely adequate for the pool's volume. The included cartridge or sand filter works fine when the pool is clean, but struggles to keep up during heavy use, cottonwood season, or after a windstorm dumps dirt in the water.

Our recommendation: run the pump longer than the manual suggests. Most manuals say 6-8 hours. In Utah's summer heat, we recommend 10-12 hours daily. If you can upgrade to a larger pump and filter, even better.

Utah Sun Eats Chlorine Fast

At Utah's elevation (4,200-6,000+ feet along the Wasatch Front), UV radiation is stronger than at sea level. UV breaks down chlorine rapidly. An above-ground pool with no shade can lose most of its free chlorine by mid-afternoon on a sunny day.

The fix is cyanuric acid (CYA), also called stabilizer or conditioner. CYA acts like sunscreen for your chlorine. Keep it at 30-50 ppm for above-ground pools. Without it, you're throwing money away on chlorine that disappears before it can do its job.

Winter: Take It Down or Cover It

Utah winters are hard on above-ground pools. Freeze-thaw cycles can damage the frame, liner, and plumbing. You have two options:

  • Take it down: For soft-sided pools (Intex, Bestway), this is usually best. Drain completely, clean and dry the liner, disassemble the frame, and store indoors. This extends the life of the liner significantly.
  • Winterize in place: For hard-sided above-ground pools, you can winterize similar to an in-ground pool — lower the water below the returns, add winter chemicals, install a winter cover, and disconnect the pump. Just know that freeze damage is a risk if temperatures stay below zero for extended periods.

Chemistry Is the Same (But Smaller Volumes Mean Faster Changes)

The water chemistry rules are identical to in-ground pools — same pH range, same chlorine targets, same alkalinity goals. The difference is that smaller water volumes react faster to changes. Adding too much of any chemical in a 3,000-gallon above-ground pool is a much bigger deal than in a 20,000-gallon in-ground pool. Measure carefully and make small adjustments.
